The Echo Room
Machinal Machinal
by Sophie Treadwell
April, 2016
(We’re searching for a very special venue for this fascinating production.)
This classic feminist play by American playwright and journalist Sophie Treadwell was inspired by the real life case of convicted and executed murderer Ruth Snyder. Premiering in 1928, MACHINAL is considered one of the highpoints of Expressionist theatre on the American stage. Of a 1954 TV version, the reviewer for The New York Times wrote of: "Sophie Treadwell's expressionistic and bitter poem for the theatre." Resurgence in study and presentation of this classic indicates that - eight decades later – this play continues to resonate with audiences.
