Rewrite the Story
We looked at locally produced theater in North Texas over the past year.
We found 135 productions across 34 theater companies.
80% were written by men.
We are sure women do not possess only
20% of the playwrighting talent.
Just 20% of the opportunities.
Echo's mission?
Champion the diverse voices of
women and nonbinary playwrights.
And yes — trans women are women.
Echo reviewed 135 productions across 34 North Texas theater companies running during the period July 26, 2025–July 26, 2026. The survey included locally produced, co-produced and workshop productions; it excluded touring presentations, festivals, staged readings, academic productions and touring Broadway engagements. For musicals, the book writer was treated as the playwright-equivalent. Gender classifications were based on publicly available biographies and pronouns, not names. Twenty-seven of 135 productions—20%—were credited solely to women or to nonbinary playwrights. Because online archives are uneven, this is a sourced, best-effort snapshot rather than an exhaustive census.
